Commissioner Barnes has shown remarkable leadership since being elected in March 2003 and has much more to offer the residents of Miramar. In his first part-term, he was instrumental in effecting provisions for residents who purchase used cars to have the police check for drug remnants to prevent possible runs with the law later on. He has demanded that the extensive use of paper be curtailed and as of the last couple of years, the copious background materials prepared for commission meetings have been replaced by commissioners using their laptop computers during commission meetings. Also at his urging, the city’s cable channel has brought more and more information to residents and the radio station proved invaluable during the post Hurricane Wilma days. |

Commissioner Barnes has facilitated seminars and talks for homeowners facing foreclosure challenges and through referrals to these professionals. He has also promoted enhanced protection for bicycle riders and has impressed on the city’s management the need to make city center at Miramar as bicycle friendly as possible. As a result of Commissioner Barnes’ prompting, in March 2009, the city is launching what will be the first annual bicycle mini-marathon as the city joins in celebrating Bike Month 2009. One of the accomplishments Commissioner Barnes is most proud of is the establishment of a scholarship fund for high school students in the city. Commissioner Barnes was the only commissioner to vote against a raise of pay months after taking office in 2003, and the difference in salary is what has funded the scholarship that now stands at $19,000.00. Hopefully disbursement can begin by the Fall of 2009. |
